Lake ballard

It lies within the Shire of Menzies. It’s the creation of Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley… and it’s called INSIDE AUSTRALIA. The first 1km to the little town of Menzies are on a sealed road.

Ballard Lake is a 5acre lake located in Vilas County. It has a maximum depth of feet.

Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Portsmouth, Virginia that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.

Goldrush Tours offers a guided day tour where you can explore the lake, the statues, and a few places on the way to and from Menzies. Despite being and a half hours from Perth, the destination is worth the time to get there. The skies are dark and crystal clear, the lake is expansive as the skies, with interesting rock formations along some of its sides, and its iconic pyramid shaped hill situated in walking distance from the camp site. Internationally acclaime Gormley is probably most famous for his huge and beautiful Angel of the North statue in Gateshea in Tyne and Wear, England.

The salt lake is home to an art installation by Antony Gormley know as Inside Australia. There a small local shop selling sandwiches, pies and the like in Menzies, but beyond that there are no pub counter lunches or cafes to stock up on, so a big breakfast or packed picnic may be in order. Setting off much later than we had anticipated and with Miss B under the weather we stopped for dinner at a free camp, just out of Menzies.

We leave Kalgoorlie-Boulder driving through the beautiful examples of Salmon Gums, Gimlets and Black Butts. After viewing the statues from the top of the mound we came back down the hill and walked out to see a few of them up close. This is probably the biggest drawcard to the area and was the highlight from our perspective. Even Lala loved it here, exclaiming, ‘I loved the water park, but this is even better!

We free camped for the evening here and enjoyed our walks around the statues.

You can see them for miles and they really feel like people out there on the lake. It is strange how you don’t feel alone out there. You walk from sculpture to sculpture leaving foot prints in the soft crust of the lake between them. I had been planning a wide sweeping shot from two islands of the shore of the lake that I had in my mind.

It was cloudy, but too much, which meant we didn’t get a beautiful light on the lake and island. It is a growing trend across the globe — and with vast distances between cities and a lack of light pollution, WA is perfectly poised to take advantage of it. Be sure to stop at the headquarters and pick up a Bird Checklist, over 2species of Birds have been observed at least once a year in the Preserve.

We started our hike just behind the Pavilion on the far side of parking lot.
