Dutch passport identification number

What information is on the dutch passport? How do you get a Dutch passport? Where to apply for Dutch passport in Netherlands? Can non Dutch citizens get a passport?


The Dutch passport includes the following data on the identity information (1) Personal Identification Number (on the back on the identity information page) Photo of passport Holder Type (P) Code (NLD) (2) Nationality (Nederlandse) Document no.

Dutch nationals living abroad can apply for a new passport or identity card from most Dutch embassies and consulates-general and from a number of municipal offices in the Netherlands. You must hold Dutch nationality and be registered as a resident in Amsterdam, or have a postal address that is registered with the City. Apply for a Dutch ID card for children. If your ID card is lost or has been stolen, you can apply for a new document at a City Office.

The Embassy issues types of passports. The most common are the national passport and the business passport. The only difference between these two types of passports is the number of pages.


The business passport has more room for visas and is meant for people that travel extensively to countries that require them to have a visa. It is printed on driving licenses, passports and international ID cards, under the header Personal Number. If you move abroa intend to get marrie or want to be eligible for certain jobs (some civil service posts, for instance), you may need to prove you are a Dutch national.


If you live abroa you can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate (bewijs van Nederlanderschap) at the Dutch embassy or a Dutch consulate in the country where you live. If you have Dutch nationality, you should apply for a Dutch passport or identity card to the municipal authority where you are registered. All children (even babies) need their own passport or identity card to travel. You have to pay a fee for your passport or identity card. When you apply for a Dutch passport, your fingerprints will be recorded – a requirement from which only children under are exempt. Your fingerprints will not be recorded if you apply for an identity card.


After issue, the fingerprints will only be stored in your passport. The travel document contains an image of the holder’s fingerprints in order to prevent identity theft (i.e. using false or stolen identity documents to impersonate someone else). Passports and identity cards are valid for years in the case of adults and years in the case of children under 18. Non-Dutch nationals who have a Dutch residence permit and who are unable to obtain a passport from their country of origin sometimes qualify for an alien’s passport.


You can apply for an alien’s passport to the municipal authority where you are registered. If you have refugee status, you can apply for a refugee passport to the municipal authority where you are registered. You must have a residence permit showing that you have been admitted as a refugee.


You can use your alien’s or refugee passport to travel to all countries except your home country. Both can be used in the Netherlands as proof of identity. Residence permits are issued to aliens permitted to live in the Netherlands under the Aliens Act or Community law.


Leave to remain (W-document) cards are issued to aliens who have applied for asylum in the Netherlands but have not yet received a final decision on their application. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) issues residence permits and leave to remain cards. The VFS Global Offices in London and Edinburgh accept both applications for renewals, as well as first applications for a Dutch passport or identity card. As of this date, you can also apply for a new Dutch passport or identity card if your previously issued Dutch travel document is lost or stolen.
