Sirs and madams

This salutation should be used for communication regarding specific projects, specific concerns, or employment. We are a collection of friends who are musicians, visual artists, and actors that decided to come together to. SirsMadams is a group of four daydreamers who craft indie folk rock tunes. Hailing from Brooklyn, they spend most of their time making buttons, doing laundry, and talking about pizza. Check them out around Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Or perhaps, TWIMC (To Whom It May Concern). If you were addressing a group of people, you would use, “Ladies and Gentlemen”. In very formal correspondence though, only the singular sir or madam is used. Further, some also argue that sir alone is gender neutral in this situation and can be used for men and women.


I know that you appreciate very honest (and courteous, of course). Dear Sir or Madam” as a Letter Salutation “Dear Sir or Madam” is a formal way to address a letter to a specific person whose name, title, or gender is unknown. To whom it may concern suggests that you either don’t know to whom you’re sending the letter or don’t care. If the recipient is an individual, use Dear, use To, or omit the salutation.

Don’t be surprised to see further movement on this. The history of the word madam is similar to sir. The word derives from my dame. However, it was once used to address a married woman or one in a position of authority. The point was to make it clear that sirs and madams are totally wrong.


Just saying Good afternoon, and looking at the panel and smiling would work fine, in fact. But do read the discussion below. You may decide to use other ways to greet your unknown reader. We got mesdames from your language, Kirjava, and welcome to the board.

Mesdames is not so common, not in America anyway and even though Madams is technically correct, it sounds ignorant. If this were a speech, it would be more comfortable to. Wholly Owned Subsidiary of Toppan Printing Co. And the Withdrawal of Shareholder Proposal to Tosho Printing Co. Ladies and Gentlemen seems trite.
