How long does a background check take for a government job

How long does it take to get a background check? Can I get a federal employment background check? It’s the same for a Federal or Government job: two to five business days. These background checks are more extensive and detailed. Why is my background check taking so long?


In most cases, background checks in the first two categories will take one to three months.

Top Secret background checks are more in-depth and will often take twice as long. Depending on their mission and role in national security, many federal agencies require security clearances. Only federal agencies can grant security clearances.

As a matter of fact you can usually count on them being finished in less than five business days. The recruiter may be running multiple background checks for several candidates and wants to complete and review all of them before reaching out.


A federal employment background check process is understandably more thorough and stringent than most. Certain disqualifiers could prevent you from obtaining the job because there may be concern about your general suitability for the position and your ability to obtain necessary security clearances. The length of the investigation depends on the number of contacts an applicant has outside of the United States and the difficulty that an interviewer has contacting people on an applicant’s security questionnaire. Suitability reviews and background checks do not begin until a candidate has been given a provisional offer and accepte and then they can be quite slow. The time required to process this background check depends on the number of other candidates applying with the TSA and can push back a formal decision on your hire for several weeks or even months. In particular, if you are applying for a job that includes handling finances, property or sensitive information, you can expect employers to run a background check before formally offering you the position.
